"Bourini" winds is the Greek sailors' term for sudden winds or squalls which occur along the Greek coast. A bourini struck the coast of Macedonia at about 1930 local time. Nine people were killed. There was severe damage to fishing boats in the Gulf of Salonika and along the east coast of Thessali as well as damage to trees and building in Thessaloniki. At sea, many fishermen remained missing for several hours but by the morning of the 22nd more than 170 people had been resuced from damaged and sinking boats. One man was found alive 36 hours after the storm, over 50 km southeast of where his boat sank.
