Posters

We have two new posters! Twelve in all! One of the posters from the Close Encounter series has been replaced by another color poster, and we have a new black and white poster as well. This completes our current plans for the next several years. Should a particularly spectacular tornado photograph be taken, we would pursue it as the subject of another poster.

The "Close Encounter Series"

Funnel with Lightning BoltThe first poster in the Close Encounter series incorporates a recent photo taken in Florida at the very moment lightning struck, illuminating the funnel magnificently.
Its 17" X 21" size is perfect for home or office. The six color process was used on heavy paper. The tornado on the lower half of the poster is of more historic interest, as it is the first known photograph taken of a tornado. The quote between them is from John Park Finley, an early pioneer in tornado research. In 1887, he said as follows: "A single experience of this awful convulsion of the elements suffices to fasten the memory of its occurrence upon the mind with such a dreadful force that no effort can efface the remembrance of it. The destructive violence of this storm exceeds in its power, fierceness, and grandeur all other phenomena of the atmosphere." The catalog identification code is CP1. You can buy this individually for $14 if shipped within the US, or part of the 4-poster Close Encounter set for $19.

Close Encounter in Beaver City The second poster in the series portrays the Beaver City, Nebraska tornado. It is also in color, and its size is 17" X 22". Our customers have been asking for this one for years! The photographer's daughter is posing in the foreground. Some idea of the size of this tornado can be ascertained if you look at the farm on the left side of the poster. The catalog identification code is CEBC. You can buy this individually for $14 if shipped within the US, or part of the 4-poster Close Encounter set for $19.

Close Encounter at Wichita FallsThe third Close Encounter poster is a personal favorite. This 17" X 22", black and white poster had an Ansel Adams-type treatment. The 1964 Wichita Falls, Texas tornado is absolutely majestic in appearance, and dwarfs the city in the foreground. Its catalog identification code is CEWF. You can buy this individually for $14 if shipped within the US, or part of the 4-poster Close Encounter set for $19.

Close Encounter at Tracy The fourth Close Encounter poster is another personal favorite. When we first saw this photograph, we took it to a camera store to have it blown up to a poster sized print. And years later, we asked our graphic designer to create something similar on our product packaging. Like the Wichita Falls poster, this too is black and white. The 17" X 22" poster has an Ansel Adams-type treatment of the 1968 tornado that occurred in Tracy, Minnesota. The silhouette of the house and its adjacent barn near the base of the tornado evokes feelings of vulnerability and loneliness, but also displays the grandeur of the open prairie with its vast dome of sky overhead.
The catalog identification code is CET. You can buy this individually for $14 if shipped within the US.

The Color Fujita Scale Poster Series

These four new posters display quite a few well-known and recognizable tornadoes. The text on each tells about the particular tornado pictured, and why that particular tornado was rated like it was. They are sold as a set of four for $19 or $14 each if purchased separately. Their 17" by 22" size make them an ideal size for either home or office, and they make a particularly striking display in dorm rooms, classrooms, and science fairs.

The first in the series showcases the talent of the Fort Worth, Texas NWS Warning Preparedness Meteorologist and photographer, Al Moller. Al and his chase partner Dr. Charles Doswell were on the chase of a lifetime in Pampa, Texas on June 8, 1995, and have both the photos and video to prove it. The Pampa tornado was one of the most intense tornadoes ever photographed. Also shown is a 1989 Beaver City, Nebraska tornado and the Wizard of Oz-like Cordell, Oklahoma tornado of May 22, 1981.
The posters are printed on heavy paper, using the four-color process.
You may buy this poster for $14, or the entire set of four Color Fujita Scale Posters for $19.

The second poster, representing tornadoes of F0 and F1 intensity, has three tornadoes that are unusual for three different reasons. The 1989 Hodges, Texas tornado, photographed by the Storm Track Newsletter co-founder and long time chaser Dave Hoadley, is in the roping out stage, and is several miles long. It was watched by more than a dozen storm chasers. The tornado that is removing the roof of an airport terminal in Fresno, California, barely missed aircraft on the runway. The tornado in the middle touched down near Rosenort, in Manitoba, Canada on July 9, 1995.
You may buy this poster for $14, or the entire set of four Close Encounter Posters for $19.

Two of the images on this poster are from the same storm system. The upper left photo on the F2-F3 Intensity poster is a back-lit tornado from the same storm system as the much larger photo below it. The lower right photo is of the Enid tornado of June 5, 1966, watched by thousands of people as it moved across the northeast part of town. It is red with Oklahoma dust. The background for these, however, is the spectacular May 31, 1990 Spearman tornado, photographed by Professor Howard Bluestein of the University of Oklahoma Meteorology Department(and of TOTO and IMAX Stormchaser! fame). The visible funnel is a half mile long, but may extend, inside the supercell, to the top of the photograph.
You may buy this poster for $14 if shipped within the US, or the entire set of four Close Encounter Posters for $19.

The shrinking stage of the Tracy, Minnesota, tornado of 1968 is displayed as the background photo on the F4-F5 Intensity poster. It was very photogenic. Unfortunately, it was also very destructive, and were it not visible for over 20 miles, there would have been even more loss of life than there was. The June 2, 1990 tornado pictured on the right cut a 110 mile track across the southern parts of Illinois and Indiana. Professor T. T. Fujita, developer of the Fujita Scale, considered the Jordan, Iowa tornado of June 13, 1976, to be the most violent he had ever studied. This wedge tornado, shown on the lower left, swept away every building from some of the farms it passed over.
