Safe Haven Shelters
Are you a manufacturer or dealer? We are a manufacturer.
Since what year have you been in business? 1998
Since what year have you been manufacturing or selling shelters? 1998
Where are you located? Mt. Carmel, IL
Phone number (618) 262-2488
What areas do you serve? Nationwide...our unit is highly transportable.
Is your shelter made to be installed above ground level, fully below ground level, or only partially buried?
What material is your shelter made of and how thick is it? Made of cross linked high impact plastic, shelter is of 3/8" or greater wall thickness. This is more than sufficient due to the arc shape. You will see more arc's than columns at most ancient ruins, covered with 24" of earth at the apex 36" average, due to the arc shape.
What is the length, width, and height of the shelters that you sell? 84" or 7' x 7' x 7'
Do you enter the shelter while still in the home, or do you leave the home and enter the shelter from the outside? You leave the home and enter the shelter, unless it was installed in the garage by the builder.
How does one access the shelter?
How does your shelter provide fresh air? Two 2 inch pvc pipes, one near the bottom, one diagonally opposed near the top giving a convection effect.
How is the shelter anchored in the ground? This is a proprietary area that our competition would love to have answered for them. Not one that I have seen has done any of the thousands of buoyancy calculations that our engineers have done. As you know, concrete in the right shape will float. Our shelter will not and we provide a lifetime guarantee against floating, or any other defect.
Was it designed to be installed when a home is first being built, or is it installed on the lot of a finished house? Designed for both uses, we suggest in the rear of the garage during construction, near the door from house to garage in an area where car is never parked. If the home is finished we suggest as near the rear entrance as underground pipes and cables allow.
How is the shelter delivered, and by who? The Safe Haven is normally delivered and installed by a licensed dealer.
Who installs it?
Is any heavy equipment needed to install the unit? A backhoe.
What kind of issues with shelter installation are you and your customers most likely to run into in your area(bedrock, high water table, frozen ground etc.)? We have run into all conditions, bedrock being the most bothersome. We have a unit in design stage that will work if we can get 2 1/2 - 3 feet deep and will work in hurricane areas as well. Nothing else poses a problem with the right shelter.
What provision has been made in case the entrance/exit is blocked by a fallen tree or debris? We ask every customer to notify their local police department and phone them via cell phone if the system is working at the "all clear" point. If otherwise the police should come to the check the shelter. We also provide an "occupied" strobe light as an accessory.
Is there a second exit in the unit? No.
Can the entrance door be locked? Entrance can and should be locked from inside when occupied and always locked from outside when not occupied.
Do you have any handicapped-accessible units? In our standard shelter you jump or actually lower onto a net that is 3'6" from the floor. You then sit on the net and step onto the floor. For a frail, wheel-chair-bound person, attempting access under their own power, our 30-40 capacity unit would be needed.
What provision has been made for seating, lighting, or storage? Our entry chute is in the traditional shape of a sky light. This gathers in all the available light to our translucent hatch cover. This allows some light in the darkest conditions.
Are these items included in the base price or are they extra? included
Are there other accessories and options that are available? If so, what are they? Ladder, chairs, occupancy strobe light, 12 volt lighting system, hand operated radio and flashlight, commode.
What is the typical cost both uninstalled and installed? Varies with contractor and installation situation.
Do you have a warranty, and if so, for how long and what does it cover? If properly installed by our licensed distributor, all but the translucent hatch cover is lifetime guaranteed. The hatch cover is guaranteed for 10 years, and may need to be replaced thereafter depending on the multiplicity of conditions that it may encounter, sun, sand, wind, rain, snow, etc.
Has your shelter undergone any kind of testing by engineers?
What else do you think we should know about your shelter?
